Low Fat Chocolate Cake

Rather than my usual practise of using oil instead of butter, to make a low saturated fat cake, I thought this cake, with a low overall fat content was worth a try. Most of the butter is replaced with plum jam and skimmed evaporated milk.

Well, it was worth a try, but it probably won't be repeated! The cake was dry, with an uneven texture - full of holes and sticky areas where there were lumps of fruit in the jam. It had a pleasant enough flavour, but that flavour couldn't really be described as chocolatey!

It also used ingredients which I don't keep in stock, and I would need it to be a much nicer cake before I kept plum jam and evaporated milk at the ready in the storecupboard.

I guess if it's necessary to cut down on all fats for health reasons, then this is probably a good way to get round the problem of having cake while on a diet, but it's a step too far for us!

That's a shame, I did wonder if it was possible to have a low fat chocolate cake. Certainly worth a try though!

Oh dear, I hate it when that happens. Perhaps it's life's way of telling us that cake isn't supposed to be low fat!

That is a great pity, sounded so interesting with the use of the jam and the evaporated milk too.

Never mind, at least it was edible, I wonder if eating it with a plum sauce or roasted plums would counteract the dryness?

A pity though because I'm on the lookout for a cake using a lot of jam - I have the European jam mountain in my cupboards!!!

Ive used apple sauce and low fat yogurt before, and I found the bbc recipie for low fat chocolate and cranberry muffuuns worked quite well (never as good as the whole shebang though)

I made them once on my blog and the cranberrys gave it some needed bite

Wonderful recipe! It looks so tasty. Hope you are well, it has been too long since I stopped by. Lucie x

These things have to be tried - you never know, it might have been a winner. Would a classic Genoese do for a low fat cake - it only has eggs, no other fat?

Shame it didn't quite work out but it does look nice!

I am visiting dieting family members later this week and have always taken cake with me before, so have been looking for a healthier version... Guess will just have to limit portion sizes instead!

Choclette - I don't really need my baking to be low fat - cutting down on the saturated fat is enough - it's just that I thought this recipe looked interesting. I'm not particularly looking for something equally low fat instead of this.

C - do you remember Dan Lepard's chocolate cake which used a berry jam in the frosting and filling?

Yes, I think I attempted that one and although it was pleasant enough didn't really warrant making again as far as I recall. Thanks for the suggestion though!
